"The moment we saw ‘Sonoma’ appear for sale we fell in love with her stunning lines, not realizing what her provenance really was, we just loved the traditional gentleman’s racing yacht good looks. I travelled from Poole Dorset to Clynder on the Clyde, and haggled only a bit before the deal was done and she came to Poole in Dorset."

A CLASSIC BRITISH "SIX METRE" YACHT

Hand Built in 1924
Designed by G. L. Watson
Built by: McGruers and Company

The 6mr (metre/meter) has been raced and enjoyed by thousands of sailors for over 100 years and they are still actively raced by crews in seas all over the world as well as simply enjoyed by friends and families. When you join the 6mr club you join a very prestigious and respected club.

The 6mr yacht is a construction class and each boat is built to an individual specification. The 6mr is a yacht class and doesn't refer to it's length as most of these boats are are between 10 and 12 metres long.

SONOMA is currently undergoing restoration by L.K.Woodford Yacht Restorations or Poole, Dorset.

Restoration is progressing more slowly than expected and costs have been considerably more than L.K.Wooford Yacht Restorations had suggested, but none the less, we look forward to completion soon based on his latest estimates and look forward to sailing Sonoma again in the summer of 2012. We'll keep you updated on Facebook and on this site.

Recently a large format and stunning book on the SIX METER (Class Type and not length) has been published, by Tim Street and Pekka Barck.

"SONOMA" is for sale by negotiation.

Asking price at this stage of restoration is £55k (57.2k Euros).
An opportunity to Buy, Sail and possibly Race one of the most desirable Classic Six Metre Yachts. The estimated cost of designing and building this yacht from scratch would be in the region of £155,000.

Sonoma is listed on the historic ships register as a vessel of merit and at this time is the only 6 METRE on the register, and does not preclude a foreign purchase/owner

Works to the hull are complete with the hull having been splined and 'faired off' now to be followed by first sealer coats of paint internally, and first coats to 'bright-work' to the top sides externally to show off the completely refurbished natural mahogany, below WL primer coated increasing the value of Sonoma to a surveyed value of £55,000 (63,000 Euros).

Next area of work will be reforming the cockpit to the original plans which was a large single open cockpit, we added a bridge forming an owners cockpit and crew cockpit to create stiffness and for locating winches and gear for short handed sailing. Overall this with the splined hull will create a very stiff structure without the need for extensive internal ring beams etc.

Restoration is on-going and an early purchase would allow for your own in-put into deck layout, decking materials, and rig etc. At this time we will proceed on the basis of a laid Teak deck as the most attractive option. Other 6mr owners hell bent on lightness have gone for softwoods with non slip finishes, or a mixture off softwood deck with teak margins, queen and king planks and combing set, which is a lighter and reasonably pretty answer.

Sonoma can easily be completed and ready for the 2012 season. The 2012 season may prove to be one of the most important sailing events for decades when combined with the Olympics, Regattas, and other major sailing events and competitions that will be held on the South Coast.

The purchaser will require to fit their own rig including mast and boom and all fixtures above deck level. No estimate is given for this as there are too many variations in materials and arrangements and costs will be to suit the owners purse rather than any other valuation.
